This fabulous set of the five Beethoven piano concertos was a highpoint of the Grand Teton Music Festival, where they were performed and recorded over a single weekend in July 2022. The soloist is the great Garrick Ohlsson, whose playing has wonderful character and personality, always derived from the music—nothing idiosyncratic, eccentric, or self-regarding, everything exquisitely phrased, opening movements dramatic, lyrical, or heroic; slow movements sung with great depth of feeling; last movements relishing Beethoven’s wit, humor, and joyous exuberance. Soloist and conductor share a rare unanimity, Runnicles coaxing a rich, warm, vibrant sound from the 55-strong Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra, made up of top-flight players from around the country. Reference Recordings has outdone its considerable self with the sonics, using the classic Decca “Tree” with updated Neuman M150 tube microphones for a perspective that eschews audiophile spectacle in favor of a window onto what could easily be mistaken for a 19th-century European concert hall. The balance between piano and orchestra may be the most realistic of any concerto recording I own. Music, musicmaking, and recording of the highest order—do not miss.
