When the pandemic prevented trumpeter Dave Douglas from bringing together his international sextet in a studio to record Secular Psalms, he adopted the same technique he’d used on 2020’s Overcome and 2021’s Dream: Monash Sessions. He worked remotely with the individual musicians as they tracked their parts individually and then, with Tyler McDiarmid, edited and mixed those “interactive improvisations” into a 12-part score inspired by the panels of 15th-century polyptych The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb (aka The Ghent Altarpiece) by Jan and Hubert van Eyck. Douglas’ music is itself a sweeping panorama, incorporating bits of sung text from the Latin Mass, Marvin Gaye, Psalm 59, and Douglas’ own writing. Blending in kaleidoscopic arrangements are Douglas’ trumpet and voice; Berlinde Deman’s tuba, serpent, and voice; Marta Warelis’ piano, prepared piano, and pump organ; Frederik Leroux’s guitars, lute, and electronics; Tomeka Reid’s cello; and Lander Gyselinck’s drums and electronics. These “sacred songs for all of us as we are” may be rooted in solemn religious iconography, but their variegated colors, dense and unfamiliar textures, mysterious moods, and volatile shifts of instrumental focus speak to postmodern, experimental jazz sensibilities.
